The non living world

So far, we have learned somethings about animals and plants. These are living things. There are also many non living things. Non living things do not breathe, do not eat and do not reproduce.

Rocks, soil, water, air, cars, buses, vans, planes, chairs, tables and a lot more things around us are non-living. Can you name 10 other non-living things?

Non-living things exist in one of the three states. These are called physical states of matter. They are:
1. Solids,
2. Liquids,
and 3. Gases.

Name 5 each of solids, liquids and gases. Solids have a form. For example, a ball is spherical. A wheel is circular. A table is rectangular. Can you give names for these solid shapes below?

Name these shapes.

Now - take a glass and fill it with water. What is the shape of the water?
Next pour the water into a small vessel. What is the shape of the water now?

Why is that water does not have a single shape?

Water is a liquid, and liquids do not have shape. Name other liquids you can see in your home. Ask your parents to show the liquids.

Last, get a balloon and blow it up. Do you see how it becomes big? Now let all the air out - do you see anything coming out? Yet the balloon becomes small. What is it that fills the balloon? Air. Air is gas.

Solids (examples), liquids (water and other examples) and gases are the three states of matter. In the next lesson we will learn more about solids, liquids and gases.

Till then,

ciao :)
