Lesson 5: A life cycle

Till now we saw various living things - plants and animals.

We learned that living beings reproduce - produce young ones.
We also learned names of young ones of many animals.

Plants are also living things and reproduce. They produce young plants.

All living things start their life as young ones and grow into adults (parents), and reproduce. The various stages of a living being's life is called a life cycle.

In this and the next chapter, we will study the life cycle of two living things - a plant (this chapter) and an animal (next chapter).

In the picture above, you see a simple life cycle of a plant.

1. The plant starts its life as a seed (top right).

2. The seeds fall in the soil and when water is available, it gives rise to a small plant with only a root (seedling).
This step is called "germination" (follow the arrow from the seed).

3. In the third step, the seedling now develops a small stem with leaflets. The roots also are well developed.

4. Finally the seedling grows into a plant. The plant now produces flowers (top left).

5. From the flower, fruits arise, and they have the seeds. Once the fruits fall off the plant, they dry up and release the seeds.

Thus, you can see that the seed germinates, grows into a full plants, produces fruits and comes back to the seed stage. This is the life-cycle of a plant.

OBJECTIVE of the Chapter:

you should be able to name the different stages of life cycle of a plant.

Activity:

Go to your garden and find different stages of the plant's life. Find Flowers, fruits, seeds, and seedlings. Spring is a fine time to do all this.

More to learn:

Do all plants reproduce by seeds? Or are there more ways? How does grass grow? Or roses? Ask your parents.
